GREEN FOCUS: Cool Things That Are Green
New contest by The 48 Hour Film Project to Inspire Environmental Activism1/19/2011The 48 Hour Film Project, the world’s largest timed filmmaking competition, has launched a new contest to promote environmental awareness. 48 Go Green invites environmental advocates and both novice and professional filmmakers to create inspiring short films that draw attention to the environmental problems the world faces.
Registration is now open for the competition that kicks off Friday, February 18, 2011. All international contestants will have 48 hours to write, shoot and edit an eco-themed film. Participants will be assigned specific cinematic elements and one of the following topics that must be integrated into a four to six minute film: the environment, drinkable water, the forest, the animals, the earth, the next generation, energy, the sea and the planet. The contest is open to anyone, although spaces are limited. Register now at www.48gogreen.com.
The 48 Hour Film Project has become a global cultural phenomenon since its 2001 launch, with more than 130,000 participants producing nearly 9,000 short films. Last year, a record 45,000 filmmakers made over 3000 films in 80 cities around the world. 48 Go Green intends to leverage this creative movement to highlight emerging environmental concerns and their solutions. Films produced in Portland will be screened at the Hollywood Theater on Feb. 24th.
"We're known for being a green city," said Doug Whyte, executive director of Film Action Oregon and Portland's Hollywood Theatre. "They picked cities with good participation for their 48 Hour Film Project contest. It's sort of perfect for us. We're an environmentally conscious city."
“By focusing hundreds of filmmaking projects all over the world on environmental issues, 48 Go Green will create a library of new resources to catalyze environmental activism,” said Co-Executive Producer Liz Langston.
The winning film will be showcased at the Cannes International Film Festival at the Short Film Corner. 48 Go Green cash prizes include $5000 for first place, $2000 for second place and $1000 for third place. Film screenings featuring local artists will be held throughout the United States, including in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Houston, Atlanta, Portland OR, Boston and Washington DC.
