info [at] freegeek [dot] org

FREE GEEK recycles and refurbishes used computers making them available to individuals and non-profits in the local community. We provide computers, education, job skills training, and tech support to those under served in exchange for community service.

We have over 700 dedicated volunteers that make this effort possible. Free Geek has two volunteer programs. The Adoption program is where any individual may contribute 24 hours of volunteering at Free Geek in exchange for a free computer. Alternately, with the help of Free Geek instructors, the volunteer builds 5 computers for Free Geek and takes the 6th one home.

Please drop off your used technology at our facility:
1731 SE 10th Avenue, Portland (2 blocks south of Hawthorne)

Or, visit our super cheap Thrift Store at the same location for computer parts & accessories.

Hours: Tues -- Saturday from 11am to 7pm
We give tours at 12pm & 6pm everyday!

Sustainable Qualification Summary
Free Geek redirects used technology back to the community instead of the landfills. Since 2000, FREE GEEK has refurbished more than 15,000 computer systems for reuse in the local community, which has saved millions of tons of carbon emissions for producing new computers. In addition, FREE GEEK's recycling program has salvaged over 1,800 tons of e-scrap, keeping toxins such as lead and mercury from the landfill and recovered valuable materials such as gold and copper for reuse.

We are very stringent about our downstream recycle vendors to ensure nothing gets shipped overseas and all of it gets responsibly recycled! It is for this reason that we are applying for BAN certification, which is the highest certification for a recycler.

I liked the set up and the people that worked there were friendly. In my case, a little too friendly. I waited in line for 10 min to donate the money they requested because they were helping students with a project.
