Intel's Behind the Scene Sustainability Leader
As more large corporations move toward being sustainability focused, many rely on outside companies to help create and monitor the variety of changes that affect their bottom line and lead to a healthier environment for people and the planet.
One company is SBM, a self service facilities management company that provides sustainability services. Among many of their clients, one large Portland employer is Intel. SBM supports their national recycling, green cleaning, greenscaping, composting, and anything else that can fit into facilities management. The National Sustainability Manager tasked with handling Intel's campuses across the country is Ana Wyssmann.
A native from Phoenix and a graduate from Arizona State, the 26 year old has made great contributions for the advancement of Intel's sustainability program. Wyssmann's primary focus is with Intel's recycling program and handling all their non-hazardous solid waste. Each quarter, she manages between 15-20 thousand tons of material ranging from metal, cardboard, paper, plastic, packaging, and food waste.
One of the biggest challenges Wyssmann faces is "engaging employees to change a culture." Wyssmann goes on to say that "businesses need to create incentives. At Intel, money made from recycling is given back to their employees through cafe discounts and enhanced gym equipment...recycling revenue is also used to improve sustainability education and infrastructure."
Wyssmann currently resides in Northwest Portland to focus on Intel. Prior to that, she was in Arizona working with Intel's campuses in that state. When she was handed that regions portfolio, their diversion rate was about 55%, now they are consistently over 80%. Due to her excellent performance, she was offered Intel's national program. Rightly so, Wyssmann is proud that she helped double Intel's recycling revenue and they are now hitting an 84% diversion rate.
Wyssmann is a southwest girl now living in Portland. She loves the lush environment and even the weather. Although, she does admit that she gladly travels for work to sunnier places in the winter months. Around town she enjoys going to Mississippi Avenue, walking her Great Dane, being a home body in front of her fire place, and making any kind of fruit pie. Like most Portlanders, the outdoors is our playground. Wyssmann is no different. She stays active by rock climbing and running.
Ana Wyssmann has accomplished a lot at a young age in a short amount time. SBM and her job is integral for corporations in order for them to be the necessary change agents needed to lead a shift toward a more sustainability focused future. Keep up the good work, Ana.
