Watch Your Dog For A Healthy Home
Last week I received another sad call. Hunter, only 2 ½ years old, had leukemia. Though it may seem unusual for a young dog to have a serious diagnosis, statistics show us an increasingly higher cancer rate in pets, occurring at younger ages. Your knowledge and action now about why these statistics matter could make a healthy difference for your pet and for you.
Your Dog Wants You to Know:
“Chemical herbicides and pesticides can hurt you.”
Ellie lived in a home where mom, concerned about termites, has a company spray every 6 months to protect the house. Could Ellie’s death from hemangiosarcoma, a ruptured mass on the heart, have a relation to chemical exposure?
“Synthetic fragrances and fumes in the home can hurt you.”
Seven weeks after the amputation of Marlo’s leg due to osteosarcoma, I received a call from his mom. Marlo and his family inhaled the fumes in their workshop/ furniture refinishing business. Though too late for Marlo, his family knows about the dangers of volatile organic compounds and takes steps to reduce exposure and remove toxins.
“Unfiltered water and environmental toxins can hurt you.”
Skippy lost his sibling to blood cancer 4 months before he was diagnosed with the same disease. Could over-vaccination, commercial dog food contaminants, unfiltered water or chemicals in and around the home have a role?
Real panic arises from people when cancer threatens their dogs’ lives. Our dogs try to tell us, very simply, that the environmental toxins cause harm.
The Warning Signs::
Allergies, food sensitivities, rashes, fur loss, pain or stiffness, weepy eyes, frequent illnesses, bad smelling breath, fur or ears… Would you take your dog to the vet for any of these issues? Many people do because they care about their dogs. Symptoms, or warning signs of worse to come, manifest in dogs and in people and doctors offer treatment and comfort with medications. What about trying natural solutions?
What You Can Do… Take Action Now:
- Be a detective. Find chemical irritants, cleaners, fragrances, pesticides and sources of toxins in your home and garden. Eliminate them.
- Use water or safe substitutes to clean.
- Vacuum often. Take shoes off when you come inside. Wipe your dog’s feet.
- Filter the water and air in your home.
- Make home-prepared, natural foods to reduce harmful additives and increase nutrition.
- Avoid chemical flea and tick control. Use non-toxic, natural alternatives.
- Avoid toys contaminated with lead, treated wood decks and other sources of heavy metals.
- Remove toxins for prevention.
When you watch your dog, you are also promoting good health for the whole family and lessening the impact of toxins on the environment as well. Oh, and your dog wants to say, “Thank you!”
