Local Limelight: Weeklyish Articles Of Interest
Eating local is the New Organic
Summer is finally here, and what better way to get out and enjoy this spectacular weather than with a little outdoor grocery shopping?
Portland Farmers Market. They've got information on each farmer's market location, as well as weekly calendars of events, and blurbs about all the perks they offer; such as wooden tokens you buy with your credit card if you forgot to hit up the ATM, and having someone hold your food until you can pull up in your car!
For a more expansive list of list of farmers markets around the Portland area, try GreenPosting’s link on farmers market information.
If you're looking for more information, some help buying more products locally, or just to challenge yourself with a little 'eating local challenge," visit Portland's Ecotrust website. They've also got a great page up there that will tell you when and how long each item of produce is in season. It's a wonderful local reference.
You can also check out Portland's branch of the national movement called 'slow food.' As they say on their website, their goal is to "...reconnect people with the foods they eat, and the cultures, community, and production behind it."
So take advantage of this great weather and hit up a farmer's market; eat local this week! But whatever you do, just don't get between me and those delicious strawberries!
