Feel Taller Through Rolfing
By Jonathan Davis
When I went to the Anisha Center for Holistic Health and visited with Benjamin Eichenauer, a Certified Rolfer and Licensed Message Therapist. He elaborated on how Rolfing works with ailments specific to one body part like a hand and how by working with the hand there is a global affect on the rest of the mind and body.
“Rolfing works with the connective tissue that helps shape how we are physically,” Benjamin said. Having never been through a Rolfing session, our conversation was a bit confusing until it turned into a short demonstration focused on my arm and shoulder as it rested on my knee.
Through a firm grip of my right arm and a slight manipulation of it, I found my arm rested in a more natural and relaxed position. Benjamin then worked on the soft tissues around my arm. I quickly noticed an increase of circulation throughout my shoulder.
Now imagine if you work on the computer all day. The repetitive motion of typing and sitting in one position over and over for years at time causes ailments that Benjamin works with on a regular basis. “By working with your natural body structure and rebalancing it, the body doesn’t have to fight gravity and overcompensate. This heals ailments that arise in one’s wrist and shoulders caused by computer work.”
Many of us have long standing patterns in the body and mind that may have developed in our youth. Benjamin mentioned “unforeseeable patterns that developed like mimicking our parent’s walk or even how we carried ourselves in school may create long-standing structural and psychological issues. Take for instance the passive type in grade school that slouched causing a compressed body structure. Rolfing can realign your natural structure, increasing positive self-perception as you move around the world.”
Benjamin went on to say that “the body organizes around what we habitually do. So when we slouch, the rest of the body creates stability around our form and overcompensates for our bad posture thereby creating tension. Tension is stuck energy.”
Like opening up a damn allowing water to flow through the rivers of our veins and muscle tissue, this stuck energy can be released through a natural means like Rolfing.
Benjamin is one of a few Certified Rolfers in Portland doing a unique form of Alternative Medicine that is becoming more popular as people become more aware of its holistic approach. Benjamin is open to working with companies on increasing employee productivity through means of Rolfing.
