GREEN FOCUS: Cool Things That Are Green
It's time to set sail on the high seas with, Leif Medicinals. A cannabis company that entered the market in 2014 after coming up with a product that was created out of necessity.
One of their founders has chronic pain throughout his body. He's been on prescription pain killers and used
over the counter drugs to combat it. However, for many people the side effects and addictive nature of prescription pain killers is reason enough to look for an alternative. It is no different than exploring alternative medicine like acupuncture or a naturopath to solve medical problems.
Cannabis is medically legal in 23 states. Recreationally, marijuana is legal in 4 states including the District of Columbia, where our federal government resides. Marijuana helps people and it’s popular. If you've ever spent 20 minutes in a recreational dispensary the types of people look like those walking into a liquor store.
Cannabis was only used a couple times a year for the people that started Leif Medicinals. However, wishing for an alternative solution to deal with his chronic pain led him to getting his medical card. He is one of the 77,000+ people that are part of the Oregon Medical Marijuana Program (OMMP).
In 2013 when they set out on the high seas to find an alternative to reduce his pain, a helpful budtender at a local dispensary educated him on the variety of ways to medicate without getting high. He discovered salves or balms that are rubbed on the skin. The cannabis is infused into the product. It worked. He loved them.
However, the industry was and still is going through many changes on testing and labeling to be more transparent on pesticides, mold, and other contaminants that could be on the cannabis or in the concentrates used in salves, edibles, and vaporizer pens.
For whatever reason, the company that made his salve stopped making them. He was at a loss. However, like many Portlanders, he and his wife are environmentally focused, coffee loving, creative types. They also enjoy solving challenges. They needed a solution for a salve and took it upon themselves to solve it. They began researching and learning so they c
ould create a product that worked.
After several concoctions, they came up with a balm that worked and was unique. Unlike other products on the market theirs uses tucuma butter. It acts as a great carrier for cannabis. It's organic. It also has more of a powder
y sensation rather than feeling greasy when it's rubbed on one’s skin. Additionally, if their salve melts because it’s left in your car for instance, it will re-solidify without separating or becoming lumpy.
Their next focus was on its scent. Pain causes people to feel uncomfo
rtable, creates stress, causes clenching, and numbness. People in pain can also begin to shut down or become erratic in behavior. They thought, how can aroma therapy help those in pain?
They created 2 different scents. The Wood Balm uses cedar wood and orange to be uplifting and energetic. In cannabis, this could be considered a sativa strain. Their other scented salve is the Field Balm. It uses lavender and bergamot, which creates a relaxed feeling. Consider this their indica strain.
They still had plenty leftover in the tub even after they set aside enough for themselves and after giving some away to friends and family. Being the opportunistic types, they decided to explore it further to see about getting their balm into dispensary's.
The other founder of Leif Medicinals was able to leverage her branding background as a freelancer to come up with nice packaging, positioning, and partnering with other local companies for their additional products in chocolate. This includes decadent THC or CBD truffles, delicious coffee and chai chocolate bars, and almond butter for those with peanut allergies.
Their products can be found in many dispensaries in Portland, Salem, Hood River, and Bend. For instance, they can be found at MindRite in NW Portland, Collective Awakenings off Sandy in NE Portland, New Leaf CannaCenter in McMinnville, and CannaBend in Bend. If your dispensary doesn’t carry it, then request that they do.
