GREEN FOCUS: Cool Things That Are Green
Portland Heritage Tree App Availabe Free10/27/2011 Portland this time of year is exceptionally beautiful especially because of the fall colors our trees display. The City of Roses takes great measures to make sure the legacy of Portland area trees last as long as the trees themselves. One decree that Portland enacted in 1993 is the Heritage Tree ordinance.
The City Forester annually prepares a list of trees based on age, size, type, historical association or horticultural value that have special importance to Portland. Then, the Urban Forestry Commission inspects and certifies worthy trees. Once enshrined in the tree hall of fame it becomes unlawful to remove, destroy, cut, prune, break or injure any Heritage Tree without the consent of the City Forester.
Portland is home to almost 300 Heritage Trees representing more than 120 different species. But, where are they? Well, now there is a Portland Heritage Tree App for that. Not only does it pin point where the trees are and provides its details, your photos can be uploaded to help build a catalog of images showing how these trees change over the seasons and over time.
