The federal government has taken notice and has high regards for United Streetcar as an innovative company bringing jobs back to America and helping reduce our dependency on foreign oil. United Streetcar is a company that emerged from Oregon Iron Works. Prior to United Streetcar, NO street car has been manufactured in America in the past 50 years.
Street cars help cities reach their sustainability goals, help commuters battle growing oil prices and reduce stress levels that develop from driving. They also allow for good people watching, eavesdropping, and conversation.
The Department of Transportation has been generous in offering grants across the country to help jump-start the American streetcar renaissance. This is great news for Portland. More family wage jobs in manufacturing will be maintained and created while helping boost the local economy.
In February 2010, Portland received $23 million from Uncle Sam for the SW Moody Project to reconstruct 3,200 linear feet of SW Moody Avenue between SW River Parkway and SW Gibbs Street near the OHSU Tram. This investment in roadway and streetcar facilities supports the Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail extension, “Close the Loop” streetcar line extensions, and the Portland to Lake Oswego streetcar line.
