GREEN FOCUS: Cool Things That Are Green
Portland Transit Mall Now Has Recycle Cans5/09/2011 The city recently placed recycling cans along the Portland Transit Mall.
It's a great step in the right direction for their public image showing that Portland takes recycling seriously, after all, there is a city-wide goal of a 75% percent recycle rate by 2015. It should also make waste management more efficient since, "approximately 30 percent of the waste collected from downtown public garbage cans [are recyclable]." A secret hidden treat with these cans is that the homeless can now collect recyclables without sticking their head half way down a garbage can to make some money to survive the streets.
Other unique visible changes around Portland in the last couple years are solar powered trash compactors that hold 5 times more waste. These receptacles can be sponsored in central Portland in a public private partnership if you'd like one in your 'hood. They're tax deductible!
Also, Portland has developed and installed various public loos around town that are very efficient for water, electricity, maintenance, and safety. It's also a potential revenue stream to be manufactured locally and sold to other cities.
Below is the the commercial on the new recycle cans. One commentor on the video's web page made a good suggestion, which would be to choose different colors to label the recyclables so they're more distinguishable.
Enjoy!
