GREEN FOCUS: Cool Things That Are Green

Lesser Known Oregon Green News
12/07/2010

Bringing you some of the lesser known news bits from around Oregon during the last week.

12/2/10  ::  Thinking about the delicious ways to enjoy crab, I flashback to Bubba in the movie Forest Gump when he lists all the different ways to enjoy shrimp.  Perhaps not as diverse of a food as shrimp, crab is still a commonly fished crustacean.  Now, consumers will be able to recognize the sustainable stamp of approval on products from the Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission crab fishery by a blue MSC logo given by the Marine Stewardship Council.  1 of only 3 crab fisheries in the WORLD to receive the MSC certification, the ODCC is the only West Coast Dungeness fishery to be certified.

Learn more about the ODCC's certification at the Marine Stewardship Council's website

12/1/10  ::  90% of the technology for genetically engineered seeds come from Monsanto Co.  That's a big percentage for a company that in the 1940's made DDT and during 'Nam made Agent Orange.  They are also the first to genetically modify a plant seed, and made a shift in their business toward agriculture.  Now they are a force to be reckon with and increasing difficult to challenge.  They developed a genetically modified sugar beet that a federal judge ruled to stop using until the USDA completes an environmental impact statement.  However, the USDA issued planting permits a month later.  So, now the seedlings have to be torn out of the ground in Oregon and Arizona.

11/30/10  ::  Shame shame shame, we know your name....The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality fined the Washington Demilitarization Co. chemical weapons disposal facility $58,600 for waste violations in failing to fully monitor chemical agents in their air system.
