Oregon Green News You May Have Missed 5.3.10 to 5.7.10

This last week we found a handful of little green news around Oregon.  Bon appetit. 

5/3/10  ::  The number of fat kids in Oregon ages 10-17 years old decreased by 32% between 2003 and 2007!  However, nationwide it grew by 10%.   The study was published in Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.  Unfortunately, Alabama, Kentucky, Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas have great fried food and BBQ...as well as poverty, which is a link to obesity.  These states had over a 20% gain in obesity during the same period.

5/5/10  ::  The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development or HUD awarded Oregon $28.5 million to improve Portland’s needier communities.  The money will be going toward Community Development Block Grant funds, HOME Investment Partnership funds and in an Emergency Shelter Grant.

5/6/10  ::  Kettle Brand, the maker of the delicious chips and now acquired by Diamond Foods has restored a wetland wildlife habitat near its Salem factory.  With a little help from a grant from the Marion Soil and Water Conservation District, Kettle got rid of invasive and non-native plants while adding 12 species of native vegetation.

5/5/10  ::  Mann Lake is going to be poisoned to get rid of goldfish and will be restored for the native Lahontan cutthroat trout that currently live their too.  Some goldies have been seen to be 13” in length.

5/7/10  ::  Portland and Oregon rank near the very bottom when it comes to finding a job and jobs advertised says juju.com
