GREEN FOCUS: Cool Things That Are Green
Green News You May Have Missed Last Week 4.26.10 to 4.30.105/03/2010 Just a few tidbits and snippets of Oregon green news from the past week.
4/30/10 :: Good ol’ Uncle Sam. He’s been happy to divvy out money during these times and is supportive to the growth of making America powered renewably. The need to expedite the process is ever more present with oil spill happening in the Gulf. A few weeks ago, what will be the LARGEST WIND FARM IN THE WORLD was blocked because the U.S. Department of Defense wants/needs to upgrade their radar system so it won’t interfere with the wind turbine blades. Great news, we’re getting the upgrade! Set to break ground soon, the Shephards Flat Wind Farm near Arlington OR will provide enough electricity to power 211,000 households.
4/27/10 :: Speaking of government spending, Metro used funds from the 2006 bond measure to purchase 20 acres along Alder Creek as well as Fanno Creek easements to allow an extension of the Fanno Creek Greenway Trail. Alder Creek is diverse it’s habitat with steelhead, varieties of trees, and elk herds. The city of Tigard plans to construct the Fanno Creek trail in a 3-6 years. The whole greenway trail will cover 15 miles through Beaverton, Tigard and Durham to Tualatin.
4/28/10 :: With all the crazyness with our school system, the progressive ways of Portland and the incentives to retrofit buildings, I’m surprised that it’s taken this long to retrofit 16 Portland public schools and the district office to be more energy efficient. Federal money in the sum of $380,000 is going to be used for energy efficient lighting retrofits. It’s estimated to save the district $70,000 in electricity. That’s money that can be reallocated to a variety of other improvements. There’s more money to be saved in those buildings, I know it!
