Oregon Green News You May Have Missed 4.13.10 to 4.16.10 4/19/2010
In our regular search of Oregon news that is green oriented, here are a few that caught our eye this past week as news you may have missed.
4/15/10 :: Just when things are cruising along, the U.S. Defense Department steps in and disrupts plans for building the WORLD’S LARGEST WIND FARM in Eastern Oregon. 2 weeks away from breaking ground on a 9 year venture, the 845 megawatt, $2 billion wind farm and its wind turbine blades may pose interference with the Air Force’s radar detection system. This affects 3 other huge wind projects planned for here in Oregon, Illinois, and Texas. There is a way around this, and maybe the US Defense Department wants a new toy. Last week the British Defense ordered a radar system that is compatible with wind turbine blades. In the name of progress for both the US Defense Department and for the greening of America, get those new radars!
4/13/10 :: Harnessing the the heat of ground water and turning it into energy is known as geothermal power. The Oregon Institute of Technology is going to unveil their refurbished oil-fired boiler building turned clean power geothermal plant this week. This project is bit more innovative than other ones. Instead of the extreme heat from water steam turning a turbine, it’s heating a second fluid that has a lower boiling point to generate the power. OIT offers a renewable energy engineering degree and is known for its geothermal expertise.
