GREEN FOCUS: Cool Things That Are Green

Oregon Green News You May Have Missed 3.29.10 to 4.2.10
4/05/2010

In our regular search of Oregon news that is green oriented, here are a few that caught our eye this past week as news you may have missed.

3/30/10  ::  Good ol’ Uncle Sam is still handing out money, but unfortunately non of it went to Oregon for education grants.  $100 million went to Delaware (need map) and $500 million went to Tennessee.  Of the 40 states that applied, Oregon was 35th.  If grades were given out and they looked like my 3rd grade report card, that would be a big fat ‘N’...with some notes added that Oregon is easily distracted.  Oregon has another chance though for the Race to the Top grant, which has $3.5 billion to play with.  Maybe Oregon just needs a tutor.

3/30/10  ::  If you’re saving your firecrackers from new years for the 4th of July, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife might want them (psych).  Now that we’re in April, they plan on using surface and underwater explosives to deter sea lions away from Willamette Falls.  Seals love Chinook salmon, steelhead and sturgeon.  However, the season feasting of these seals face the multibillion-dollar recovery plan to save threatened and endangered runs of salmon and steelhead fish.  Willamette Falls seals will face a non-lethal attack, but that can’t be said for Bonneville Dam seals.  1 of which has already been euthanized.

3/30/10  ::  Wim Wiewel, the name invokes medieval times, the president of Portland State and Portland General Electric have partnered up in the name of sustainability.  PSU and PGE will be combining both their strengths, research and application, for “urban mobility and integration of energy and sustainable design.”  PGE pledged $50,000 to the university to help refocus its science building into a more science-based economic development complex.
