GREEN FOCUS: Cool Things That Are Green

GreenPosting Food Writer Jared Goodman Introduction
2/17/2010

To the green people of Portland and beyond, let me introduce myself. My name is Jared Goodman, and I will be the food writer for GreenPosting.

Every month I’ll be reporting on Portland’s bustling food scene. But rather than saturate the pool of food critics and the like, I’ll investigate, explore, engage, challenge, dissect and discuss the politics of food here in Portland. Though, before I extrapolate on the future endeavors of this monthly posting, it’d be good for you to know a bit more about me and my relationship with food.

Among close friends and family, it’s a known fact that I didn’t eat any fruits or vegetables until my early twenties. Not only that, but I denied myself foods with unrevealed ingredients. I refused ethnic food - be it Mexican, Indian, Thai, Ethiopian, etc. For years of college I strictly followed the all-American diet of hamburgers and pizza. (Burgers consisted of meat, bun and ketchup.) Forget organic, let alone nutritious. Food was nothing more than a means to an end.

Looking back now, it’s hard to pinpoint the beginning of my metamorphosis. Years ago I migrated West from East and developed an appreciation for alternative diets, holistic medicine and environmental sustainability. A couple years later I was living in Minneapolis and preaching the good word of local foods. Come June 1st 2008, I committed myself to a strict 100-mile diet for one year. As a locavore and burgeoning dogmatist, my passion for critical food literacy and food justice was born.

Fast forward again and I’m in Portland, planting the seed for a career in food. I read, write, think food. Food justice. Food politics. Food security. Good food. Real food. Local food. Whole food. I teach families critical food literacy and basic cooking skills. I consult households on meal planning strategies, and of course, I have a blog, Good-Man-Eats, to document these ever-evolving food projects and ideas.

This newest development - writing for GreenPosting.org - will be fabulous. Expect articles on food policy in Portland, community gardens, the 100-mile diet, farmer’s markets and the occasional interview with local sustainable businesses. I encourage discussion and debate. Please  share ideas, criticisms, and comment if need be. This is the beginning of something great. I promise.

(Jared is an educator, activist and food writer here in Portland. He is the creator of Good-Man-Eats, a blog about food - teaching it, critiquing it, and eating it. For questions, comments or suggestions, contact Jared at jared@goodmaneats.com)
