GREEN FOCUS: Cool Things That Are Green

Deposit a Gift is a Sustainable Solution For Gift Registries
2/03/2010

Celebrate the milestones in your life while keeping your environmental impact to a minimum.  I’m not going to get into local, seasonal, organic catering options or event locations, but rather to guide your decision for registry services.

Consider Depositagift.com, a cash gift registry website for all of life's big events. They aim to bring asking for money—rather than gifts—into the mainstream. So whether you are getting married, having a baby or celebrating another milestone, this site is for you! They give users the tools to create unique registries and design/host a free website, all in one place.

Think of all the miles your presents will travel by air, land, and sea to only later be returned because Auntie Sema already bought it for you.  Think about the gift wrap you tear open and the packaging it takes to surprise you.  Finally, think about where your gift money is being spent.  Having cash allows you to buy your gifts from businesses made and sold in your neighborhood, city, and state.

Friends and family can contribute funds toward the ‘things’ you want most and then you can use the gift money to shop for what you want, where you want, and when the time is right for you.

Let’s say you just got engaged.  Congrats by the way on getting engaged!  You’ve already purchased a house together, but it’s a fixer upper.  Friends and family can put funds toward landscape design by Winterbloom, or Edmiston Design to convert your attic or basement to livable space.  They can feel good knowing that their money is being applied toward something more worthy than a hard-boiled egg holder (worst gift ever).

Another example is for baby showers.  Congrats by the way on the new baby!  Just email your Deposit a Gift webpage to friends and family for them to add funds for reusable poopy pants.  You’ll be able to support locally made cloth diapers sold at Zoom Baby Gear store rather than from Target.

From custom furniture by Jonathan Nussbaum to Yurt shelters for camping, to organic food delivery, using Deposit a Gift is a sustainable solution for gift registries.  It allows for flexible gift ideas that a group of people can contribute toward while keeping money in your state, reducing carbon from shipping, and wasting wrapping material.

Please visit Depositagift.com or you may contact them for more information.
