GREEN FOCUS: Cool Things That Are Green

Oregon Green News You May Have Missed 12.7.09 to 12.12.09
12/14/2009

There are a lot of light news about Oregon and sustainability that you might not have read.  Here are some environmental topics that recently caught our eye.

12/07/09 : Oregon restores ocean habitat with a little help from Uncle Sam.  The government funds cleaned up 1,367 crab pots and 3.8 metric tons of line, cable, and buoys along Oregon’s near-shore waters.  Ocean debris hurts and kills birds, fish, and other marine mammals.  The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife managed the clean-up.  Eight fishing vessels spent a total of 81 days at sea.  (See the video below by the Oregon Dungeness Crab Commision about the project)

12/08/09 : Gresham’s wastewater treatment plant installed the largest ground-mounted solar facility in the Northwest!  The panels, facing Sandy Boulevard, will generate 8% of the plant’s annual electricity.  Enough to power 42 average-sized homes per year.  In 5 years their goal is to be energy independent.  They’re well on their way.  With the solar, the plant makes over 70% of their own energy!

12/11/09 : Lake Oswego is an EPA Green Power Community due to the high rate of renewable energy purchases by residents and local businesses.  Lake Oswego is the 12th community in Oregon and 25th in the nation to receive the honor.  336 residential customers and 20 businesses signed up for the recent green power challenge.  What does a winning community get for this honor?  A “Welcome to a Green Power Community.  We exceed EPA guidelines for buying clean, renewable energy.” sign, which will be found on community entrances on State Street and Kruse Way.

12/08/09 : Klamath Falls is one of worlds top 10 cities to embrace geothermal energy says the Geothermal Energy Association.  Other American cities named are Reno, Nevada and Boise, Idaho.  Interesting fact: Klamath’s Oregon Institute of Technology heats it’s entire 11-building campus with geothermal energy.  Geothermal energy is produced by harnessing underground heat from steam generated by hot water.

12/10/09 : OMSI will be adding a renewable energy and sustainable practices exhibit.  They received a $2.3 million grant from the National Science Foundation for the projected $3.3 million it will need for the exhibit, community outreach, and events.
