Ecotrust Market Closes | OR Musseling Open | Forest Waste to Fuel

There are a lot of light news about Oregon and sustainability that you might not have read.  Here are some environmental topics that caught our eye recently.

11/23/09 : Ecotrust’s farmers market, held on Thursdays is closed permanently.  While the other 4 Portland Farmers Market locations increased in traffic and sales; however, this location did not.  The search for the perfect NW location will continue.  “As of October 2009, there were 5,274 farmers markets registered in the USDA Farmers Market Directory.  Over the last decade, the number of farmers’ markets has increased 170 percent.”  Seasonal.  Local.  Organic.  It’s tastes sooooo good when it hits your lips.

11/23/09 : The entire Oregon coast is open to mussel harvesting.  Fun for the whole family, inexpensive to do, and finally safe to eat.  The paralytic shellfish toxins have dropped below alert level.  Since October 23rd, Bastendorf Beach to the California border has been closed to musseling.

11/23/09 : Boardman is starting construction of a celluslosic ethanol plant.  Oregon received $17 million in grant money for thinning forests to protect against disease and fire.  This plant will convert forest waste and wood pulp into fuel.  ZeaChem, headquartered in Colorado, says this plant will be able to produce 250,000 gallons of fuel per year.
