GREEN FOCUS: Cool Things That Are Green
Gift Trees | Green Holiday Gifts That Give as They Grow11/25/2009 This holiday season, your gifts can give more as they grow. A Gift Tree from Friends of Trees costs $35, and a Gift Grove of six young native trees costs $100. All Gift Trees will be planted in the Collins Sanctuary in Forest Park.
When you place your order at www.FriendsofTrees.org/GiftTrees, Friends of Trees will print your name and the name of the person being honored on a gift acknowledgment card and mail your card within three business days of your order. Please place your order by Dec. 10 if you want your gift received by the holidays.
Buying Gift Trees leaves a living legacy both for the people who receive your gift and for the Portland metro area. In addition to slowing climate change and reducing air and water pollution, your Gift Trees will help restore the Collins Sanctuary, a legacy from the Collins Family Foundation to Portland area residents. First given to the Oregon Parks Foundation, the land was purchased by Metro in 2008. Its restoration is now made possible through a partnership between Metro, Audubon Society of Portland, and Friends of Trees.
Friends of Trees is celebrating 20 years of bringing people in the Portland-Vancouver metro area together to plant and care for city trees and green spaces. Since 1989, thousands of Friends of Trees volunteers have planted more than 375,000 trees and native plants.
This year Friends of Trees is partnering with Portland in its Grey to Green Initiative to help the city meet its goal of planting 83,000 street and yard trees in five years. In addition, Friends of Trees is diversifying its natural area planting program, now called the Green Space Initiative, to include both natural areas and public right-of-ways.
