GREEN FOCUS: Cool Things That Are Green

13th Healthiest, Oregon Reviews Renewable Tax Credit, Oregon Wolves
11/23/2009

Portland area green oriented news you may not have known about from the last week. What kind of news do you like? Email your entertaining items to us!

11/17/2009 : Oregon ranks 13th...up 5 spots from last year! What determines the health of the people that make up a state? The United Health Foundation, a nonprofit arm of health insurer UnitedHealth Group Inc. ranks states on obesity, binge drinking, smoking, access to healthcare, health policies, community and environmental conditions, and clinical care data. Oregon placed 13th as the healthiest state with Mississippi being the least healthy...I would have guessed Texas personally.

11/17/2009 : Gov. Ted Kulongoski is ordered a hurry up review for reducing the tax credits Oregon gives as an incentive for renewable energy companies to set up shop in Oregon. Since 2007, tax credits have increased from $10 million a year to an estimated $167 million for the 2009-2011 biennium. The problem is that Oregon gave tax credits to companies that, "went bankrupt, never operated or divided their projects into multiple facilities to get additional credits." The Oregonian article went on to say that some of the proposed rule changes, "give the state more leeway to reject applications, define more closely what constitutes a single project and allow the state to reclaim money if the project fails to meet its promises."

11/19/2009 : Wolves in Oregon are making a comeback. Wiped out in the 1940's, the first evidence of their return to Oregon was in 2008 as pack leader, whose name is B-300, left idaho's Timberline Pack and moved to greener pastures in the Wallowa Mountains. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife took the video seen below, which they think show 6 pups.
