10/27/09 : Pioneer Courthouse Square has a new park as a neighbor, and she’s a pretty one. Directors Park, located at SW Park and 9th is over 44,000 square feet of granite plaza with a fountain, café, public restroom, bike parking, public artwork, benches, trees, and a glass canopy for protected outdoor seating. Outdoor seating? Yup, that’s right. I happened to walk past the park about 45 minutes before the opening day ceremony and the glass canopy and openness of the park makes it great for live entertainment year round.
10/28/09 : Death on the Oregon Coast! Thousands of sea birds have died on the coast of Oregon and Washington due to algae that stripped birds of their waterproofing, causing hypothermia. But it’s baffling scientists because it’s the first time this kind of algae bloomed on the Northwest coast. So, what caused it? The rusty brown algae bloom occurred because the ocean water had a warm layer on top and the salinity of the water dropped creating conditions for this type of algae to thrive. Movie time! Watch scared and pissed off sea birds being helped.
10/30/09 : Did you know that Portland was chosen as a test market for the largest electric verhicle and charge infrustrue project, EVER? That project comes at a timely time for Portland’s Green Lite Motors, because they are 1 of 3 companies in the Northwest to win start-up money to make their business dream come true. Green Lite Motors is developing a three-wheeled gas-electric hybrid vehicle capable of 100 gallons per mile.
10/28/09 : I just want to say thank you to one of my favorite uncles, Uncle Sam. He gave Oregon $49,261 that was matched to total $122,689. The Oregon Department of Forestry was awarded this grant money to address how urban and community trees and forests assist communities with issues such as climate change, energy conservation, and improved public health and well-being.
10/27/09 : FIGHT!! I know, grab a bottle and beat it over a person’s head repeatedly without it breaking. That’s what a member of the Clackamas River Water district board of commissioners Katherine Kehoe did in Oregon City. Now, she is being charged with second-degree assault, which is a felony. She also was a lead member of the Oregon City Area Sustainability Political Action Committee. She’s a passionate one.
10/27/09 : Has bicycling ever been more popular in Portland than now? It’s a growing trend with major benefits to the environment, roadways, your health, but not your fashion. Are those second skin fitted bike short and cycle caps for 12 year olds necessary? Oops, slight tangent. You may have also seen all white painted bicycle memorials to honor the fallen while cycling. St. Stephen’s Church in downtown Portland located at SW 13th and Clay is dedicating the Madonna del Ghisallo Portland Bicycle Shrine to remember those who have died while cycling. Open to all, it’s, November 2nd at 5:30pm.
