Portland Approves PGE Park Renovation for MLS

The city of Portland has okayed the renovation of PGE Park downtown for Major League Soccer.  Merritt Paulson, the owner of both the Timbers and minor league baseball team the Beavers, is also the son to Henry Paulson, the former United States Treasury Secretary under the Bush administration.

From the Portland Business Journal article, the deal is worth $31 million, in which Paulson is going to have to “contribute $8 million and prepay $11.1 million in rent for the last 18 of the deal’s 25 years.”

PGE Park has the old time feel that baseball fans and sport enthusiasts love.  The classic old style stadium below ground is meant for home run balls flying over the left field fence looky-loos and nearly hitting the Max train.  With America’s past time getting the boot to a new location to most likely and properly named, Beaverton, the Beavers playing downtown will be missed by many.

I’ve seen both worlds of baseball and soccer at PGE Park, and Portland is more embracing to the Timbers than the Beavers.  The Timbers games I’ve been to have been rowdy, crowded, and fun, while the Beaver games are more mellow and less crowded.

Get your peanut eating, left field fence watching, enter the stadium at the bottom of the 7th inning for free baseball in now because in 2011 the baseball mitt will be replaced with the scarf.
