GREEN FOCUS: Cool Things That Are Green

Fish Farming
4/21/2009

Can I please have 2 orders of unagi, 1 california roll, and one roll deep fried because that makes everything taste better.  Oh, wait, what’s the soup de jour?  Shark fin soup?!

Fish consumption has doubled since the mid 70’s and 80’s due to higher demand across the world from developing countries.  This is caused by the vast population and income growth, along with the urbanization movement in developing countries, due to increased employment opportunities in cities versus in the country side.

In reading the Future Of Fish, 69% of all fish consumption comes from developing countries like China, India, and Southeast Asia.

Because of this huge influx of consumption, the unthinkable has begun; the oceans are being depleted of fish.  To meet the demand, fish farming, also known as aquaculture has started to take precedence.

Like all farms, there is an abundance of waste left behind from fish that are kept in pens.  All that fish poop gathered at the bottom reduces oxygen levels in the water, affecting its environment.

However, this can be minimized when farms are located near a strong current or there is aquaculture systems set up to filter the toxins.

The best (enter sarcasm) is that some farm fish are genetically modified, like salmon.  If a genetically modified salmon escapes from it’s pen, it’ll dominate the wild fish for food and spread disease.  It’s pretty much straight out of a comic book that will eventually be made into a movie.

The ocean makes up 70% of the earths surface and it’s vastly understudied for how important it is to our everyday livelihood.  The over fishing and fish farms being developed is evidence of this problem.

NBC Nightly News did a short clip on fish farming.  Enjoy…
