GREEN FOCUS: Cool Things That Are Green

Poorly Converting Open Space ~ Opinion
4/14/2009

An open space in an urban area can be transformed to create a copasetic environment between the concrete jungle we live in everyday, to a pleasant oasis to enjoy the surroundings like watching a butterfly cruising around or blocking the path of an ant for entertainment.

There are great examples all over Portland of transformed urban areas by organizations like The City Repair Project and by people like those of the Pittman Addition Project, which GreenPosting wrote about.

When an empty lot in my neighborhood started to get some visitors interested in transforming the weeds and grass into a garden, I was silently applauding their efforts.

Real change was happening for the betterment of those living near it.  On a regular basis, they would bring soil down, create landscaping, plant small trees and plants, and even draw with chalk on a nearby retaining wall.  Real talent and luv was exhibited.

But, what about when it’s done half hearted?  When the idea is there, but not the stick-to-itiveness?  Then what do you have?

You have a perfectly nice overgrown lot now scarred by good intentions.  The open space now looks like it has been landscaped to look like the islands of Indonesia, with one being heart shaped.  In all honesty, it looks worse now than as an empty lot with grass and weeds.  I commend the effort whole-heartedly, but lets have some follow through.

Fortunately, grass and weeds are resilient plants.  Hopefully, they take back their land.

I too was silently applauding their efforts. I often watched them from my window above, wondering what these random and somewhat mysterious gardeners were up to.
It could be an unintended consequence of their slacking, that we motivate and provide the follow through to turn this lot into a simple and lovely green space for the residence and passers by in our neighborhood.
