  Vertical Farming: The Urban Future (VIDEO) 2/11/2009 Vertical farming in urban areas could just be another on the long list of ways to reduce the global footprint of producing and shipping agriculture from rural to urban areas. The grand master behind this idea is Dickson Despommier who was featured in Fuel Film, a movie about bio-fuels. Read GreenPosting's review of Fuel Film not so much here, but here. From Despommier's essay, "one vertical farm with an architectural footprint of one square city block and rising up to 30 stories (approximately 3 million square feet) could provide enough nutrition (2,000 calories/day/person) to comfortably accommodate the needs of 10,000 people employing technologies currently available." Ok, well who eats 2,000 calories these days? Still, 5,000 people is still a lot of hungry hippoes. Using greenhouse methods like hydroponics, Indoor farming can produce crops year-round.
