GREEN FOCUS: Cool Things That Are Green

VIDEO: Portland Public Bathrooms Go Solar
11/21/2008

Portland will be rolling out the first solar powered public bathroom.  The inaugural toilet will cost us $140,000.  With interest coming from other cities and our Canadian neighbors up north, the city of Portland hopes to make some money on them charging $25,000 per toity.

Known for in-depth interviews, KGW captures the hearts and minds of Portland’s homeless as it interviews one gentleman who explains his frustration of the lack of public restrooms in Portland: “There’s no public restrooms!  You walk around the street, you wet your pants.”  Something tells me that it’s not because of the lack of public bathrooms.

These bathromms are designed to keep people in them for as little time as possible.  The sink is outside and pedestrians can see people’s feet.  The idea is that it’ll be a less desirable spot for doing drugs and for prostitution.  I figure, druggies don’t care and prostitutes will turn faster tricks.  Where is this toilet going in?  NW 5th & Glisan.

The first bathroom will be unveiled next month sometime.  If you see someone camping out prior to the ribbon cutting, it’ll be either someone trying not to pee himself again or it’ll be me wanting to be the one to christen it.
