Where Your Leaves Go11/11/2008
GREEN FOCUS: Cool Things That Are Green
This time of the year is the beginning of the soggy bottom pants squishing through piles of wet leaves. Some leaf puddles are big enough that you can splash your own leg, dog, and neighbor with tree chud.
This is also the time for front yards, side walks, gutters, storm drains and streets to become caked with leaves which cause street flooding, massive puddles, and dirty and dangerous situations for pedestrians, pets, bicyclists, and motorists.
For those that have already bagged their leaves or have gardeners, then I applaud your initiative in cleaning up your yard and neighborhood in a timely fashion. Perhaps the rest of you fall into these 3 categories
- Those that didn’t realize there was another tree about to shed it’s leaves creating another afternoon of work. You almost planned it perfectly!
- Those that wait until every leaf has fallen before any work is done. Known as the baby back effect. As in you’ll eat a full slab of baby back ribs before using 1 napkin. It’s more messy and takes a while to clean up, yet gratifying
- Those that do nothing. It’s a year round project and social experiment.
The bagged leaves are taken to Leaf Recycling Depots where there are recycled into high quality compost. Neighborhoods with a heavy concentration of leaves have a Leaf District Schedule where city workers come by to pick up the leaves.
