GREEN FOCUS: Cool Things That Are Green

Screw Lower Gas Prices!
10/30/2008

Please don’t give in to the temptation to drive because the average price of gas in Portland is now about $2.60.  Earthly and healthy habits have been created during the dog days of summer since gas prices were in the mid $4.00 range.

Habits like riding your bike, using Tri-Met, carpooling, and just plain ol’ walking hopefully will continue.  Erica Cates, a teacher said to the Oregonian: “I'm starting to do a little bit more now that the gas prices are coming down," she said. Still, she expects to continue using her bike and to walk for shorter trips.  "I've kind of got in the habit now," she said.”

Have you already forgotten about the advantages and joys of riding your bike and taking the MAX to work?

Riding your bike, though more wet and cold in the winter, helps to relieve stress and keep your gut in check so you’ll be so sexy when you rip your shirt off during your winter vacation and summer holiday.

The MAX, in some respects, is like going to grammar school again.  Mrs. OnlyTimeYourFriendsWithHerChildIsInTheRideToSchool is still the same, except she drives a train instead of ’85 station wagon with wood siding.  On the MAX, you see familiar faces that you rarely talk to, you look for the same seat each time, and you don’t have to worry about the commute, just waking up earlier to catch the train.

The drop in gas prices during the Fall and the spike in Spring happens year after year.  Oil companies are gettin’ while the gettin’ is good.  Does this sound familiar financial institutions?

We’ll see even higher prices next summer as we continue to move to a more renewable world and because peak oil is reality.  Americans will fall back to depending on the automobile, and when the price goes back up, we’ll be paying for it again at the pump.

I’ll repeat it; please don’t give in to the temptation to dive because the average price of gas in Portland is now about $2.60!  If you do, the habits will be lost and you’ll go through the same issue as this past summer.  And, I’ll be there to say I told you so.

Use less, save more!
