Bush Pedals Mountain Biking into National Parks

New bike trails in the not to distant future could be opening up throughout America’s public parks.  Bush is an avid biker and the ruling would be proposed around November 15th, which would allow it to be finalized before Bush leaves office.

This would open up backcountry trails to mountain biking, which have been “blamed for erosion of trails and trampling native plants. They also disturb other park users, such as hikers, birders and horseback riders,” says Jeff Ruch, executive director of the Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility.

From the article, Bush has received bikes from manufacturers throughout his presidency.  Some of these manufactures are part of The International Mountain Biking Association that has been lobbying to change these rules since the 1990’s.

Hopefully it takes more than a couple of sweet bikes to persuade a President, but who knows these days.

Mountain biking is a great way for people of all ages to get outside, exercise, and see our beautiful country.  Northstar at Tahoe has created one of the largest mountain bike parks in the country.  Locals and tourists are now able to enjoy a mountain that was once just open for the winter.  Now, with established well-maintained trails, people can enjoy the mountain year round.

Allowing people to pedal past the end point of walking opens up the land to not only see our country, but to experience it in more ways than on horseback or on foot.  

With everything, there are trade offs.  By opening up the trails to bikes, there becomes a greater risk to the environment.  Perhaps their will be an increased revenue into National Parks to help maintain these trails.  Also, those that enjoy being immersed in mother nature, will hopefully respect her whether on foot or on pedal.
