GREEN FOCUS: Cool Things That Are Green
Students Walk & Bike to School Day10/08/2008Today, Rosa Parks Elementary School celebrated International Walk to School Day by 300 students and their families.
Over 5,000 schools from every state in America took part in today’s event. Oregon can boast that 179 schools across the state took part in today’s “first step to change community culture and create environments that are more inviting for everyone, young and old.”
Today’s event marked the start of this years Portland’s Safer Routes to School program. The idea behind this program is to, among other things, increase children’s daily physical activity, examine the routes children take to school, and identify safer routes.
This morning may have been a bit chilly for a walk to school, but those that participated had a great time. Perhaps it even will open up the door for more walks to school with students, family, and faculty.
One student summed it up best with this comment; “What I like best about walking is that I can walk anywhere.” Followed by a parents inner monologue; “As long as he’s safe and on time”, in which the boy followed up thinking that he better be back in time for afternoon cartoons and a juice drink or two.
