GREEN FOCUS: Cool Things That Are Green
Two More Pesticide free Parks in Portland10/03/2008Hillside Park in NW Portland and Midland Park in SE Portland have been added to the list of designated pesticide-free parks in Portland. This now makes five parks in total considered to be pesticide-free. The original three parks are Lair Hill, Sweallcrest, and Arbor Lodge.
Four years ago the Northwest Coalition for Alternatives to Pesticides, or the NCAP, worked with the Portland Parks and Rec department to create a pilot program to make three city parks pesticide-free.
From the article in the Portland Tribune, “The nonprofit has organized 244 volunteers who have put in a combined 1,374 hours removing weeds at Lair Hill, Sewallcrest and Arbor Lodge parks so the city did not need to resort to pesticides.”
The price to be pesticide-free is more costly with an annual price tag around $3,600, plus almost $10,000 is startup costs.
However, it’s a small price to pay knowing Portland families and pets can enjoy parks that aren’t polluting the rivers or being maintained with known chemicals to cause cancer.
